What is the Amtrak Organization?
Amtrak began in 1971 as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (NRPC), a wholly owned government corporation created by Congress out of a need to create an intercity passenger rail system that would provide service at competitive rates. The NRPC was given $1.5 billion in federal funding, and it also received $120 million from states for start-up costs. Amtrak’s first president was Winton Blount, who served until 1975 when he resigned to head up the Pennsylvania Railroad.Is Amtrak down for you right now?
