The Pokémon Company, a Japanese consortium comprised of Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures, manages the Pokémon media franchise. All three firms share the franchise copyright, but Nintendo is the only owner of the trademark. Satoshi Tajiri founded the brand in 1995. The series began with a pair of video games developed by Game Freak and released by Nintendo for the original Game Boy. They've subsequently surpassed Nintendo's Mario series as the world's second best-selling video game franchise, with over 279 million units sold as of September 2015. Pokémon is a brand that transcends age and borders. It is, at its core, one of the most powerful and enduring global franchises of all time, and its popularity continues to grow as new Pokémon video games and apps are unveiled, characters make their way onto the big screen in feature films like 'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu', and everybody welcome a new wave of aspiring trainers into a ever-growing family.
